Walking my Chocolate Labrador

What daily habit do you do that improves your quality of life?

Around 7 years ago, I was completely stressed out, working in a toxic environment. It was affecting my health and I was desperate to get a better perspective on life.

With two young children and financial commitments, I wasn’t in a position to walk away.

I felt like the whole family needed a bit of an “emotional ground/earth”.

Lillie

Rachel wasn’t keen on getting a dog, but on holiday I went to a pet shop and bought some dog toys, a lead and a few bits and bobs. Just to pave the way and get everyone used to the idea.

I started looking for a dog. Then, one Sunday morning, I went and bought a dog. It was pretty much a rescue as the owners couldn’t cope with the dog with their toddlers and she was kept isolated in a room with nothing in it.

Early on, she was very excitable and difficult. I wasn’t sure if we would be able to keep her. It was really tough and I got a dog psychologist to visit us and help with training. Fortunately, with a bit of effort we turned it around, and she developed into a lovely dog.

I walk Lillie every day and it’s a good opportunity to take a bit of time to keep things in perspective. I stepped back a bit from my work, was made redundant and moved on to a much better working environment. I reconnected with the important things in my life. If a few things drop of the edge of my desk, so be it!

There are more important things in life than work!
